Best of 2010

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

-George Santayana

Often mistakenly attributed to Plato, this phrase is one of my favorites as it reminds us to take responsibility for our actions and never forget the mistakes we’ve made, for better or for worse.

As the new year has come, everyone is busy making their resolutions (we’ll forget about it all in a month or so, but this is the time when we can really take pause and contemplate reinvention).

William Beutler (the Wikipedian) has put together a top ten list of Wikipedia news for the new year. With every new year, it’s always a good idea to take a look back so that we can remember, and with any hope, not repeat any of the mistakes that we regret.

I’m not usually a fan of ‘best of’ lists, but this one is a good read. Here’s what he has to say in a nutshell, saving the best for last:

10. Wikipedia backups discovered

9. Cuba’s Wikipedia copycat

8. Mike Godwin vs. the FBI

7. Wikimedia expansion to India

6. Wikipedia gets a new look

5. Flagged revisions, pending changes

4. Wikipedia in education

3. Larry Sanger reports Wikimedia to the FBI

2. Wikileaks and Wikipedia confusion

1. The face of Wikipedia fundraising
