Mark Deuze is Professor of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. In light of current events, he initiated a series of Zoom interviews with Ukrainian (and East European) journalists working in Ukraine. Below you can find the first two interviews. This vlog features  the team of Ukrainian media organization Gwara Media, based in Kharkiv and Kyiv. Joining Mark in conversation are Serhii Prokopenko (CEO and coordinating editor) and Yaroslav Ustich (creative producer) from Kharkiv, Olena Migashko (editor in chief) in Kyiv, and journalist Dasha Kotelnikova calling in from Italy. In the interview, Serhii, Yaroslav, Olena and Dasha talk frankly about their experience of the on-going war (since 2014, when Russian forces annexed and occupied Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts) and the Russian invasion of February 2022, the work that they continue to do to tell the story of Ukraine, spread news, and support the creative industries of their country, how they are helping (and protecting) foreign journalists who come in to cover the war, and what people can do to help. Mark Deuze goes into conversation with Jakub Górnicki, CEO and co-founder of Polish journalism network Outriders. Jakub (and some of his fellow Outriders) have been reporting out of Ukraine (Kyiv, Odessa, and Lviv) since February 19, 2022. In this interview Jakub – calling in from Kyiv – talks openly about managing his work, keep in touch with and visiting his family back in Warsaw, supporting journalists in Ukraine through the Outriders network, and his #LOVESPEECH initiative to counter hate online.
