Book Release of INC ToD #51 in São Paulo on the Failed Coup (May 7)

BOOK RELEASE
The Planalto Riots: Making and Unmaking a Failed Coup in Brazil

The unsuccessful coup d’état of 8 January 2023 in Brasilia, Brazil, where thousands of rioters stormed and sacked government buildings is a notable example of the scale of extreme-right mobilizations made possible in large part through social media, and executed by masses of followers wanting to reclaim authoritarianism and the demise of democracy. THE PLANALTO RIOTS presents a multi-disciplinary analysis of the events building up to the failed coup, the coup attempt itself, its failure and its aftermath. The authors in this bi-lingual collection analyze the event from a multi-disciplinary point of view including philosophy, media and communication, activism, art, architecture and visual culture.

The book co-edited by Lou Caffagni, Isabel Löfgren, Gizele Martins and Paola Sartoretto, will be launched at the VI International Seminar on Mediatization and Social Processes, held at the School of Art and Communication at the University of São Paulo (ECA-USP), on Tuesday May 7th, at 3 pm (GMT -4). Co-editors Lou Caffagni and Isabel Löfgren will moderate a discussion with authors Apoena Cosenza (Instituto Mario Schemberg), Aline Dalmolin (Universidade Federal de Santa Maria) Ana Paula da Rosa (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul) and Bartira Fortes (Södertörn University).
