Mapping Leiden University’s Ties to Israel: Ending Complicity in Apartheid, Occupation, and Genocide
A new report documents the connections between Leiden University and Israeli apartheid, occupation of Palestinian territory, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. It reveals how seemingly normal research projects, student exchange programs, and financial investments in fact directly support and sustain Israeli academic institutions, the Israeli military, Israeli companies, and Israeli government agencies in the repression of Palestinians, the violation of their dignity and humanity, and the taking of their lives.
Following the guidelines of the Palestinian Committee for the Cultural and Academic Boycott of Israel (PACBI), the report calls upon Leiden University to cut its ties to these institutions. The PACBI call for boycott is not a call to boycott individuals. Rather, it aims to break any and all connections between our own institutions (in this case, in the Netherlands), and institutions that facilitate and continue Israel’s repression of Palestinians through apartheid, occupation, and genocide.
It is unusual to think of universities, those framed as bastions of freedom, innovation, and progress in the service of humankind, as agents of oppression. But it is time for us to open our eyes, to see, with clarity, the reality of what is happening to the Palestinian people at the hands of the Israeli government. Like it or not, our universities, here in the Netherlands, are connected to this, and are complicit in it.
Our universities and their communities do not exist in a vacuum, but are part of a larger world that is currently saturated with injustice and unimaginable brutality, costing thousands of Palestinian men, women, and children their precious lives. That we are not ourselves directly perpetrating violence against the Palestinians, that the ties are complex, that many of these ties are long-standing, none of this absolves us of responsibility.
The report’s findings indicate the urgent need for our universities to act upon their moral commitments to freedom and justice, to prove that these are not mere words on paper.
To put it simply, this report asks, given what we now know, what will we do next?
Cutting ties with complicit Israeli institutions in order to support Palestinian freedom and save Palestinian lives is a moral duty. We are perilously close to ignoring the most basic lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides: human freedom, human dignity, human life are precious; therefore, we must not be complicit in the destruction of our fellow human beings.
We must stand up for Palestinians. Each one of us. Now.

‘De banden tussen de Universiteit Leiden en Israël: beëindig medeplichtigheid aan apartheid, bezetting en genocide’
Een nieuw rapport documenteert de banden die de Universiteit Leiden heeft met het Israëlische systeem van apartheid, de bezetting van Palestijns gebied en de voortdurende genocide in Gaza. Het rapport onthult de manieren waarop schijnbaar normale onderzoeksprojecten, uitwisselingsprogramma’s en financiële investeringen direct steun bieden aan Israelische kennisinstellingen, het Israelische leger en andere overheidsorganen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de onderdrukking van Palestijnen. Een onderdrukking die de waardigheid, menselijkheid en levens van Palestijnen vernietigt.
In navolging van de richtlijnen van de Palestijnse campagne voor de academische en culturele boycot van Israël (PACBI), roept het rapport de Universiteit Leiden op om de banden te breken met deze instituties. De oproep tot boycot van PACBI is niet gericht op individuen. Het is gericht op het breken van alle banden tussen onze instituties (in dit geval, in Nederland) en instituties die de Israelische onderdrukking van Palestijnen middels apartheid, bezetting en genocide faciliteren.
Het is ongewoon om universiteiten – vaak gezien als bolwerken van vrijheid, innovatie en vooruitgang in dienst van de mensheid – te zien als beoefenaars van onderdrukking. Echter, de tijd is gekomen om onze ogen te openen. Om de werkelijkheid onder ogen te zien van wat de Israelische staat Palestijnse mensen aandoet. Wellicht ongemakkelijk om te zien, maar Nederlandse universiteiten zijn hieraan medeplichtig.
Onze universiteiten en hun gemeenschappen bestaan niet in een vacuüm, maar zijn onderdeel van een wereld die constant overspoeld wordt door onrecht en onvoorstelbare wreedheid. In de context van dit rapport gaat dit ten koste van duizenden Palestijnse levens, bestaande uit mannen, vrouwen en kinderen. Niks ontslaat ons van het nemen van verantwoordelijkheid. Noch het feit dat wij niet zelf degenen zijn die geweld plegen tegen de Palestijnen. Noch de complexiteit en lange geschiedenis van onze banden met Israelische instituties.
De bevindingen in het rapport tonen aan dat het hoog tijd is dat onze universiteiten hun waarden van vrijheid en rechtvaardigheid in de praktijk brengen, zodat het niet alleen loze woorden op papier blijven. Met andere woorden stelt het rapport de vraag: wat gaan we doen met wat we nu weten? Het verbreken van banden met medeplichtige Israelische instituten om Palestijnse vrijheid te ondersteunen en levens te redden is onze morele verantwoordelijkheid. We zijn vandaag de dag gevaarlijk dichtbij het negeren van van de meest fundamentele lessen van de Holocaust en andere genocides, namelijk dat alle mensenlevens waardevol zijn. Alleen al om die reden weigeren wij medeplichtig te zijn aan de vernietiging van onze medemens.
Wij staan op voor Palestijnen. Ieder van ons. Nu.
