On Thursday night November 2 2006, at the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam, I attended the first Freddy awards ceremony. The price, in fact three jury prices and one audience price for the best Dutch architecture website was initiated by the Dutch architecture portal Archined. The first price went to Venhoeven CS, the second to BAR architects and the third to Strootman landscape architects. The general public, that could vote online for one of the 15 nominated sites (out of 135 websites that registered), chose bureau SLA. In between the presentation of the nominated sites and the announcement who won I gave a short presentation about my impressions where the Dutch architects website stood. According to Piet Vollaard from Archined that celebrated its ten years anniversary in this manner, the average website has made considerable progress, in particular over the past 2 or 3 years. However, most of them are not more than online portfolios, online name cards. The very basic idea of linking is still new. What will happen over the next years is a ‘social turn’ towards blogs, bookmarking, social networking and online collaborations with clients, local governments, builders and subcontractors.
