Is another internet — one closer to what we believed in the 2000s, decentralized, less vigilant, more about people than companies and robots — still possible?

“ Internet Extinction ” by Geert Lovink is an effort to try and answer this question. Geert calls on readers to examine the current status of the internet to think creatively about bifurcating alternatives. To do this, he uses memes, cites internet forums and well-known activists and calls on a team of thinkers who are, almost all, focusing today on the relationship between neoliberal capitalism and digital technology: there is Bernard Stiegler, Franco “Bifo” Berardi, Tiziana Terranova, Donatella Della Ratta, Yuk Hui, but also Mark Fisher, Jaques Derrida, Bertolt Brecht and Walter Benjamin. From Stiegler comes a maxim that runs through the intentions of this book: “putting automatisms at the service of a negantropic deautomatization.” From Benjamin, an invitation to today’s task: “brushing history against the grain”.

Geert asks questions several times in this book to take us out of an exclusively nihilistic position and call us to action. For example: “How to transform discontent and counter-hegemony into a true transition of power in this late platform era? What can fill the void in our defragmented brains after the internet vacates the scene? What might life consist of after our fragile minds are no longer assaulted by the numbing and depressing effects of doomscrolling?”
