Ahmed on his laptop

DSC_0140 (640x607)

Nadeem Baghdadi is an artist living in Blackburn, Lancashire (UK). I really liked this painting so I asked Nadeem if I could put it on my blog. He wrote the following:

“My main aim in this painting was to have the subject lit up by the laptop screen that he had placed directly onto his lap. I found that the light that emitted from the screen has a different radiance and intensity that the light coming from fluorescent or any other artificial lighting source. This posed a challenge for me as the lights main source was concentrated around the subjects shirt and then gradually faded away, daylight light has a separate consistency and is able to light the subject as whole, with shadows forming where you would expect. This however was completely the opposite to what i was used to. I captured this slow fading shadow effect through a gradation in blue hue, starting with an ultramarine blue and gradually fading to a maya or powder blue, this toning and fading took a long time to achieve. The lighting from the laptop also highlighted the back area that was passed the subject, namely that of the legs and the top of the head having a sort of invisibility about them, yet still present.”
