Video conferencing – what a peculiar way of coming together online via applications like Zoom, BigBlueButton, etc. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has reorganized existing methods of exchange and turned a comparatively marginal technology into the new normal, multipoint video conferencing in particular has become a favored means for web-based forms of remote communication and collaboration without physical copresence.
Taking the recent mainstreaming of video conferencing as its point of departure, this international anthology examines the complex mediation of this new form of social interaction. Connecting theoretical reflection with material case studies, the contributors question practices, politics and aesthetics of videoconferencing and the specific meanings it acquires in different historical, cultural and social contexts.
Four interrelated sections – “Teaching | Learning,” “Infrastructuring | Interfacing,” “Performing | Appearing,” and “Working | Cooperating” – bring together contributions from Kim Albrecht, Christian Ulrik Andersen, Alexandra Anikina, Maha Bali, Tilman Baumgärtel, Tom Bieling, Donatella Della Ratta, Philipp Deny, Jan Distelmeyer, Frithjof Esch, Winfried Gerling, Will Houstoun, Irina Kaldrack, Martina Leeker, Geert Lovink, Kalani Michell, Laura Katharina Mücke, Olga Moskatova, Beate Ochsner, Søren Bro Pold, Robert Rapoport, Katharina Rein, Siegfried Saerberg, Robert Stock, Vera Tollmann, Axel Volmar, and Andreas Weich.
